Newcastle United suffered a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

An own goal from Magpies defender Steven Taylor broke the deadlock at St. James' Park, before Joshua King doubled the visitors' advantage midway through the second half.

Ayoze Perez's sixth goal of the season gave United a lifeline but the result was put beyond any doubt in stoppage time when Cherries full-back Charlie Daniels raced forward to score their third.

Emmanuel Riviere was handed his first start of the season and, with just 36 seconds on the clock, the French forward came within inches of breaking the deadlock.

Moussa Sissoko swung a dangerous cross into the heart of the penalty area where Riviere threw himself at the ball but just failed to connect.

That set the tone for a rampant start from the hosts. Stand-in skipper Jonjo Shelvey was next to try his luck in the second minute but dragged his 20-yard effort narrowly wide of the upright.

Having weathered that early storm, Bournemouth gradually grew into the contest and Max Gradel looped a close range strike off target before Benik Afobe sent a half-volley over the bar.

In the 15th minute, a raipd counter-attack, led by Georginio Wijnaldum, ended with Perez bending a shot from outside the area narrowly over, and soon after only an outstanding piece of defending prevented United taking the lead.

Sissoko and Daryl Janmaat combined well down the right and when the latter's cross reached Riviere seven yards out, he pulled the trigger, only to see Cherries centre-back Simon Francis - at full-stretch - deflect the ball behind with his head.

And that block was to prove crucial as, on 28 minutes, Bournemouth broke the deadlock.

Jack Colback's misplaced pass on the edge of the area was seized upon by Gradel, who evaded a handful of challenges before feeding King wide on the left. The former Blackburn forward duly delivered a low cross which Taylor, attempting to cut it out, could only slide past the wrong-footed Rob Elliot.

That knocked the stuffing out of Newcastle and it took until the final minute of the first half before they conjured up another attempt on goal.

Riviere chased a ball down the right channel, hooking it into the heart of the penalty area where Taylor - trying to make amends for his own goal - had ventured forward.

The centre-back controlled on his chest and struck a fierce half-volley but saw two visiting defenders combine to divert it behind.

Aleksandar Mitrovic was introduced at half-time in place of Riviere, as the Magpies looked to get a foothold back in the contest, but it was Bournemouth who came closest to scoring again when right-back Adam Smith drilled a low strike that had to be pushed away by Elliot.

Just past the hour mark Mitrovic threatened, bending a 20-yard shot narrowly the wrong side of the upright, having been given time and space on the edge of the area to pick his spot.

And Janmaat went even closer minutes later, driving forward, exchanging passes with Wijnaldum and forcing Cherries keeper Artur Boruc into a decent save down low at his near post

Sissoko then drilled straight into the midriff of the Polish stopper, and that was the French midfielder's final contribution as he was soon replaced by Rolando Aarons for United's third and final change.

But within seconds of the young winger's arrival, Bournemouth doubled their advantage. Matt Ritchie's first-time ball allowed King to get in behind the home side's rearguard, and the Norwegian kept his composure to thump home into the roof of the net.

Newcastle halved the deficit in the 80th minute when Shelvey's pass dissected the visiting defence and Perez raced clear to finish confidently past Boruc.

But any hopes of a point disappeared in stoppage time when Cherries full-back Daniels raced forward and drilled home an excellent strike to finish off a miserable afternoon for United.
