Lee Mason will be the referee for Newcastle United's Premier League clash away at Aston Villa on Monday night (kick-off 8pm GMT).

The Bolton-born official is yet to take charge of a game involving the Magpies this term but refereed both of United's league matches against Everton last season.

In total, Mason showed nine yellow cards in those fixtures - eight of which were given to Newcastle players - but did award a penalty during United's memorable 3-2 win against the Toffees in March after Jordan Pickford's foul on Salomón Rondón.

So far this season, Mason has refereed nine games in all competitions, handing out 26 yellow cards and one red card to Sheffield United's Billy Sharp during the Blades' 1-0 home defeat against Southampton in September.

The 47-year-old, who has been on the list of Select Group Referees who officiate in the Premier League since 2006, will be assisted by Scott Ledger and Mark Scholes on Monday night while Tim Robinson will be the fourth official. Jarred Gillett will be the Video Assistant Referee, with Dan Cook as the assistant VAR.
