The Magpies were pegged back in the second half, after a blistering start against the Red Devils saw them lead 2-0 inside the opening ten minutes and seemingly on course for their first victory of the season.

Japanese international Yoshinori Muto came in for his full league debut while Federico Fernández returned from injury. Paul Dummett missed out, though, meaning Javier Manquillo started at left-back with Kenedy pushed further forward than he had been against Leicester seven days earlier.

And in the seventh minute, the Brazilian raced onto an Ayoze Pérez pass, ghosted past Ashley Young and sent a low shot beyond David De Gea to silence the Stretford End.

Then, less than four minutes later, the Spaniard was picking the ball out of his net again. Muto held off Young in the box, turned and drilled home a powerful low strike.

Jose Mourinho's men appeared shell-shocked, and Newcastle nearly had a third when Jonjo Shelvey made space and curled a shot towards goal, only for De Gea to shovel the ball behind.

With just 18 minutes on the clock, Mourinho made a change, bringing Juan Mata on in place of defender Eric Bailly, and the home side instantly created their first real opening as Nemanja Matic met Young's corner but couldn't beat Martin Dúbravka.

Either side of a low Pérez shot which was dealt with by De Gea, Marcus Rashford squandered a great opportunity as he glanced wide from Romelu Lukaku's right-wing cross and Paul Pogba saw an effort deflected wide.

But at the other end, the Red Devils were grateful to their goalkeeper for a stunning save to deny Muto a second after Jamaal Lascelles had nodded a Shelvey free kick into the forward's path. Then, from another Shelvey set-piece, Lascelles headed over the bar.

Manchester United finished the first half strongly; Dúbravka dived to his right to hold Pogba's low shot in the 42nd minute and both sides had a penalty appeal, with Young seemingly handling a Shelvey delivery and Muto arguably doing the same in the other box.

And the home side looked menacing at the beginning of the second period, too. A deflected Pogba shot was parried by Dúbravka but only as far as Matic, who somehow blazed over from eight yards, before Mata and Rashford both missed the target with opportunities of their own.

But Newcastle remained dangerous on the counter attack, as Kenedy jinked into the box but lashed his shot over the bar.

Mata gave the Red Devils hope with a sublime free kick in the 70th minute - but Matt Ritchie almost made it 3-1 moments later with a cheeky flick from Muto's cross, which De Gea smothered.

However - after Dúbravka had saved from Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling, Anthony Martial levelled with a well-taken strike 14 minutes from the end.

There was still time for Lukaku to clear a deflected Diamé header off his line before, in the 90th minute, substitute Sanchez headed home to deny the Magpies even a point.
