Two heavily-defected goals from Bernardo Silva knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Holders Manchester City went into the last four in relatively routine fashion at the Etihad Stadium, although both goals had an element of fortune about them, while a big first-half save from Stefan Ortega to deny Alexander Isak proved to be a key moment in the game.

Newcastle were backed by 8,000 travelling supporters against Pep Guardiola's men but fell behind in the 13th minute when Silva advanced into the box and saw his shot loop off Dan Burn and over Martin Dúbravka.

Four minutes later, Sean Longstaff won possession inside the City half, but his dangerous cross from the right was punched away by Ortega.

And the home side doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Silva struck once more, with the ball this time hitting both the boot of Joe Willock and the head of Sven Botman to deceive Dúbravka.

Then came Isak's big opportunity. Jacob Murphy's delivery from the right was headed back across goal by Burn, but Isak's controlled effort from ten yards was brilliantly saved by the Blues' German goalkeeper.

City ended the first half well, as Jeremy Doku shot over before a superb turn from Phil Foden took the England man into the box, but pressure from Bruno Guimarães ensured that his shot was off target.

Doku saw a strike deflected wide by Jamaal Lascelles, making his 250th Newcastle appearance as part of a five-man backline, before another Doku effort was kept out by Dúbravka, who then saved a header from Rúben Dias.

And the second half continued in a similar vein, with Dúbravka thwarting Doku once more as he flew to his left to push away a powerful drive, then Erling Haaland bent a shot narrowly wide.

Lascelles blocked a goalbound Jošku Gvardiol shot before, just after the hour mark, Eddie Howe made a quadruple substitution with Miguel Almirón, Lewis Hall, Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley replacing Anthony Gordon, Burn, Willock and Longstaff.

That gave United some fresh impetus and Botman sent a header off target from a corner, but the Magpies were unable to find a route back into the game as City booked a semi-final place at Wembley.
