Eddie Howe’s side kick off their Premier League campaign against Unai Emery’s Villans, who finished in seventh place last season, and this will be the third time Madley has officiated a fixture involving the Magpies in 2023.

The 39-year-old referee, promoted to the Select Group 1 Referee List in June 2019, oversaw Newcastle’s 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James’ Park in March 2023 and handed out three yellow cards that afternoon, booking United forward Alexander Isak.

The Huddersfield-born official was involved in Newcastle’s goalless draw against Arsenal in January and brandished nine yellow cards at the Emirates Stadium, booking Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almirón.

The Yorkshire whistler, older brother of fellow Premier League referee Bobby, took charge of 24 English top-flight fixtures last term, showing a total of 87 yellow cards and three red cards.
