Sammy Ameobi was on the scoresheet as Bolton Wanderers beat Sheffield United 3-2 in the FA Cup.

The winger fired home a fine effort just after the break at the Macron Stadium, curling home from 25 yards as Phil Parkinson's men progressed to the third round.

The 24-year-old was replaced by Chris Taylor with eight minutes remaining of the tie.

Full back Jamie Sterry missed Coventry City's 4-0 defeat at Cambridge United as they crashed out of the competition, while forward Ivan Toney picked up a booking but couldn't help Shrewsbury Town make a breakthrough as they drew 0-0 with Fleetwood Town. The 20-year-old was substituted in the dying seconds at the New Meadow.

Luton Town beat Solihull Moors 6-2, with Alex Gilliead playing 76 minutes for the Hatters before being replaced by Daniel Potts, but Macaulay Gillesphey didn't get off the bench as Carlisle United were beaten 2-0 at home by League One side Rochdale.

Neither Kyle Cameron nor Tom Heardman were involved for Newport County and Hartlepool United in their respective fixtures this weekend - and England Under-20 frontman Adam Armstrong was an unused substitute in Barnsley's 3-0 win at Birmingham City in the Championship - but fellow youngster Paul Woolston kept a clean sheet for Blyth Spartans in their 0-0 draw with Buxton in the EvoStik Northern Premier League.

Further afield, Tim Krul missed out on Ajax's 2-0 win over Groningen as he continues to step up his return from injury, while Siem de Jong got 90 minutes under his belt as PSV Eindhoven drew 0-0 with Roda JC.

Marseille beat Nancy 3-0 in Ligue 1, with Florian Thauvin getting on the scoresheet just after the break before being withdrawn a minute from time, and Henri Saivet's Saint-Etienne were beaten 2-0 away to Rennes, where the Senegal international made a cameo appearance off the bench with six minutes remaining.

Kevin Mbabu came on after 77 minutes of BSC Young Boys' game against Basel and extended his side's lead just two minutes later, bagging his second goal of his loan spell as Young Boys triumphed 3-1.

And Emmanuel Riviere wasn't part of the Osasuna squad as they were beaten 3-1 at Sporting Gijon.
