Chris Kavanagh will be the referee for Newcastle United's Carabao Cup fourth round tie at home to Chelsea on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.45pm GMT).

The Magpies face Enzo Maresca's Blues for a second game in succession, following Sunday's 2-1 defeat in the Premier League on Sunday, and this will be the second time Kavanagh has officiated a fixture involving Eddie Howe's side this term.

The 39-year-old, who refereed last season's Carabao Cup final, was the man in the middle for United's 2-1 comeback victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers last month and handed out six yellow cards at Molineux that afternoon, booking Newcastle trio Dan Burn, Joelinton and Jacob Murphy.

The Ashton-under-Lyne-born official, who has been on FIFA's list of international referees since his appointment in 2019, has shown three red cards in his last six Premier League matches.

Please note there will be no VAR in operation for Wednesday's cup tie.
