Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe says Tuesday's Carabao Cup third round tie against AFC Wimbledon will be seen as "an opportunity for those that haven't had much game time to get game time".

The Magpies host the League Two outfit at St. James' Park (kick-off 7.45pm BST) aiming to set up a last-16 clash at home to Chelsea and Howe, following Saturday's 1-1 draw against Manchester City, is likely to rotate his squad ahead of facing the Dons, who knocked out Ipswich Town to secure their passage into round three.

Howe is hoping to build on last weekend's encouraging display against the Premier League champions but could be without the services of Kieran Trippier and Sandro Tonali for the cup clash, who were both forced off in the latter stages against City.

Here are some of the boss' main talking points from Monday's pre-match media briefing at the Newcastle United Media Centre:

On team news:

“We will wait and see how Kieran (Trippier) is. He felt okay yesterday but we are not sure if he will be ready for tomorrow. Alex (Isak) won’t be fit for the game. Sandro (Tonali) came off with cramp, he is a player we will make a decision on later today.”

On making changes for Tuesday's cup tie:

“I think we will see it as an opportunity for those that haven’t had much game time to get game time. Our preparation will be the same as we do for a Premier League game, we want to progress and will take this game seriously. We do not underestimate anybody."

On attacking options:

“Assessing our options, we are light in the centre forward area, I thought Anthony (Gordon) did very well on Saturday, his commitment and endeavour to the role. We really like Will (Osula), he is training really well and we have a decision to make.”

On the challenge of AFC Wimbledon, who currently occupy sixth spot in League Two:

“We are looking forward to welcoming them. For us, we take the game seriously, they have started the season well, they are a strong team and are very good from set plays.

"Defensively they have been excellent this season too, we have a challenge to break them down.”

On Miguel Almirón, who started for the Magpies in August's Carabao Cup clash against Nottingham Forest:

“Miggy will be like every other player in the squad who wants to play. Miggy is really highly valued by all of us, this is a big moment for him to show his qualities. He has made a huge contribution to our success in recent years and is a player we hope will do well."

On Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City:

“We had a strong reflection on our start to the season, we are a very honest group. That was much more like ourselves against Manchester City, we rose to that occasion and now the challenge is to do that on a consistent basis.”
