The 23-year-old Spaniard has started six of Newcastle's eight Premier League games so far as Rafa Benítez's side sit ninth in the top flight.

And, although they conceded twice in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Southampton, the Magpies boast one of the meanest defences in the division.

Manquillo - a summer signing from Atlético Madrid - has more than played his part in that statistic, but still believes there is more to come from him.

"I am feeling more and more comfortable as games go by," he told NUFC TV last week. "However, I also know that I can give much more, and that I can still improve. I am working hard for that purpose.

"Being familiar with the Premier League - three years in my case - is of massive help," added Manquillo, who has spent time on loan with Liverpool and Sunderland earlier in his career.

"Settling in is made even easier by everyone in the club. Everyone is always willing to help. And there are a lot of Spaniards right now, which is good."

His versatility has been an asset to Benítez, with Manquillo playing in both full-back positions already this term.

Although predominately a right-back, his most recent appearances have come on the opposite side and he explained: "At Marseille, for instance, I played more games at left back than I did at right back. It's not a new position for me. I am used to playing there."

He's not the only member of his family to have made an instant impression in black and white stripes this season, either.

Recently his twin brother, Víctor, joined him on Tyneside. A former Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid youngster, the forward has played for RSD Alcalá and AD Alcorcón and joined Ebac Northern League Division One side Ashington - who also play in black and white stripes - in September.

He scored a fine goal on his debut against Easington Colliery in the FA Vase and has already caught the eye of a club at a higher level.

"I was very happy to have him around," said Javier. "Unfortunately, my brother has recently suffered a minor injury and he's had to return to Spain for an operation.

"After playing for Ashington, he had already secured a trial with Gateshead, but this setback means he's going to have to be patient whilst he recovers."
