Newcastle United were saddened to learn of the death of former goalkeeper Gordon Marshall.

The Surrey-born stopper began his career at Hearts in Scotland before making the move to St. James' Park in 1963.

Marshall was a regular between the sticks as the Magpies won the Second Division title in 1965 and also featured in the First Division for Joe Harvey's side, making a total of 187 appearances for United.

After leaving Tyneside to join Nottingham Forest in 1968, Marshall - whose sons Gordon and Scott also became professional footballers - played for Hibernian, Celtic, Aberdeen and Arbroath before retiring in 1978.

The thoughts of everybody at Newcastle United are with Gordon's family and friends at this difficult time.
