Fairs Cup winners returned to St. James' Park on Sunday for the 80th birthday celebration of former Newcastle United captain Bob Moncur.

Friends, family, former players and club staff spent an evening in the Moncur Suite - named in honour of the legendary captain - celebrating his remarkable achievements over the past eight decades, which include making 296 appearances for the Magpies between 1960 and 1974.

Fellow 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup winners Pop Robson, David Craig and Alan Foggon were among the guests in attendance as Moncur took to the stage to reflect on his time in football.

The celebration also touched on an inspiring life outside of the sport, which has seen Moncur overcome battles with cancer and conquer trans-Atlantic adventures driven by his passion for sailing.

During an evening filled with anecdotes from Moncur and those closest to him, heartfelt messages were also shown from numerous icons of the North East including Alan Shearer and Ant and Dec, with Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe also sending his best wishes.

A highlight of the evening was a message from Bob himself, who shared: "Arriving on Tyneside as an apprentice in 1960, I could not possibly have imagined that I would be celebrating this milestone right here at St. James' Park more than six decades later.

"I have long said that the honour of spending a lifetime in football comes with the privilege of meeting wonderful people along the way. It is a pleasure to see that so many of those familiar faces - friends, family, former teammates and colleagues - have reunited this evening.

"I look forward to toasting the past, present and moments we will share in the future. Here's to finally ending that reign as the last cup-winning captain of Newcastle United."

The evening concluded with a toast to Moncur as a sailing-themed birthday cake was presented on behalf of the club, prior to a fitting rendition of Mark Knopfler's Going Home (Local Hero).
