Newcastle United Under-21s face West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League 2 on Monday night, with Johnny Emerson looking to "put things right" in their push for the play-off spots.

The young Magpies return to league action following a 2-2 comeback draw against Everton 13 days ago, recovering from a two-goal deficit as late strikes from Emerson and Ellis Stanton salvaged a point for Diarmuid O'Carroll's side.

Emerson is relishing the contest against Albion's second-string at the ARMCO Arena, home of National League side Solihull Moors, and is aiming to take positives from the fightback against their Toffees counterparts in their bid to return to winning ways in the Premier League 2.

The 19-year-old winger, who signed his first professional contract with the Magpies last summer, told newcastleunited.com: "We are looking forward to it. We had a good second half against Everton to recover from two goals down but we still feel like it's a game to put things right and get back on track to where we want to be and push for the play-offs.

"The Everton game showed that whatever happens during the game, we're able to stick together and even if we have bad parts of the game, it doesn't mean the result will too. We weren't at our best but still got a good result which is the sign of a good team.

"With the team is chopping and changing with players being injured or going out on loan, the unity in the squad will be key especially if there are younger players stepping up.

"People like me and some of the older lads will need to step up and keep the group together which is big when the team is changing a lot and making sure we have all the same values and attitude heading into each game. The morale is high, training has been good everyday and everybody's attitude has been top each day."

Emerson bagged his first goal in the Premier League 2 against Everton, building on an assist recorded in the young Magpies' 4-2 win against Gateshead in the National League Cup, progressing into the quarter-final stages as Group C winners.

The Carlisle-born teenager, a representative of Scotland at under-19 level, is pleased with his contributions in front of goal and revealed work on the training pitch has proved a key factor towards his positive displays for United's second-string.

"It's something I've been working on after training, doing extra shooting or crossing with the coaches," he added. "To see it is paying off feels worth it and hopefully I can carry that on and gets me in a better place until the end of the season.

"You've got to be selfless for the team but selfish in terms of wanting goals and assists because you want to help the team but striving to be the best player in every game.

"That's the mentality that I train and play with. That is what Diarmuid (O'Carroll) has instilled into most people but I've definitely benefited from that to try and be the best player in everything I do."
