A ten-week summer break felt much longer for Newcastle United Women's energetic midfielder, Elysia Boddy. United's number 22 missed a chunk of last season through injury, which has only made her more eager to get back out on the pitch.

Becky Langley's side ended the season as FA Women's National League Division One North champions, but stepping up into the Women's Championship will be a test for all of the players.

Boddy is just one of several players in this United squad who can boast Championship experience and is keen to show everyone what she can do at that level.

Pre-season got underway for the Lasses last week and Langley and her coaching staff have been putting the players through their paces with vigorous fitness tests, but Boddy is just delighted to have her boots back on.

"I'm buzzing to be back," Boddy admitted. "Two months off felt way too long and I couldn't wait to get my boots back on. I'm really enjoying being back with the girls.

"It's always a lot of testing when you come back to pre-season and we prepare for it. We get given performances for over the summer to put us in the best possible position."

Alongside a core group of players who've helped Newcastle achieve two promotions in two seasons, Boddy and her team-mates have been joined by six new faces this summer.

Shania Hayles, Deanna Cooper, Demi Stokes, Claudia Moan, Rachel Furness and Amy Andrews already look to have raised the standard in training, according to Boddy.

"The signings have settled in straight away and it feels like they've been here for a long time," she said.

"We've managed to bring in a lot of players experience which I can learn from and they'll bring so much to our already amazing environment.

"You can already see the standard has stepped up from last season by everyone. We're all upping our game as players and ultimately, with ex-WSL and Lioness players coming in, then we all want to reach that standard."

It wasn't just on the pitch last season where United received plaudits from people outside of the city, but also in the stands.

Newcastle become well-known for their fantastic support both at Kingston Park and on the road, which is something Boddy has certainly been missing these last ten weeks.

"Obviously, with us going up a division then the standard has to go up again," Boddy told newcastleunited.com.

"We have to improve ourselves and we're certainly doing that already, so I'm very excited about what is to come.

"I've definitely missed the fans and I can't wait to hear them again chanting and shouting when we walk out at either Kingston Park or St James' Park; it's so exciting.

"I can't wait to get my boots back on properly, get back out on the pitch and show everyone what I can do."

Newcastle United Women will host Italian side AC Milan Women in the highly anticipated Sela Weekender at St. James' Park on Saturday, 10th August. Tickets for the weekend - which also include Newcastle United's men's team games against Stade Brestois and La Liga outfit Girona - are on sale here.
