Academy. EFL Trophy opponents revealed for young Magpies

Newcastle United Under-21s will take on Port Vale, Shrewsbury Town and Macclesfield Town in Group D of the 2019/20 EFL Trophy.

Newcastle's second-string, one of 16 Category One Academy sides invited to participate in the competition this term, faced League Two Macclesfield in last season's tournament, defeating the Silkmen on penalties in the second round at St. James' Park.

However, United also met League Two Port Vale in the 2017/18 campaign, suffering a 1-0 defeat against the Valiants at Vale Park.

United's youngsters, who will competing in the tournament for a third successive season, reached the EFL Trophy last 16 last season after achieving a 100 per cent winning record in Group G following away wins against Doncaster Rovers, Notts County and Grimsby Town.

The young Magpies' impressive run was ended by League One Sunderland after suffering a 4-0 defeat against the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light.

The opening EFL Trophy fixture will take place on the week commencing Monday, 2nd September.
