Newcastle United let slip a lead at Crystal Palace as they went down 5-1 in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

Papiss Cisse's second goal of the season gave the Magpies a dream start at Selhurst Park, as the Senegalese striker glanced home Daryl Janmaat's cross with less than ten minutes on the clock.

However, Palace hit back straight away with two goals in three minutes.

First, James McArthur saw his strike deflect off the back of Paul Dummett and wrong-foot goalkeeper Rob Elliot, before Yannick Bolasie kept his cool in a crowded penalty area to find the back of the net.

With half-time approaching, Wilfried Zaha's bouncing volley gave the hosts breathing space and that was extended early in the second period as Bolasie bagged his second of the afternoon.

And with the last kick of the game McArthur also completed his brace, firing home a low left-footed strike.

Palace raced out of the traps and Chancel Mbemba had to be at his best inside the opening two minutes, making a crucial near-post block to prevent Connor Wickham from connecting with Yannick Bolasie's low delivery.

Goalkeeper Rob Elliot was the next Magpie to be called into action, getting fingertips to a Jason Puncheon cross and diverting it away from the forehead of the on-rushing Wickham.

But completely against the run of the play, United broke the deadlock in the tenth minute.

When Janmaat skipped past the challenge of Puncheon wide on the right, there appeared little on. However, the Dutchman was given time and space to drive forward, drift inside and dink an inch-perfect cross to Cisse, who glanced home his second goal of the season.

That sparked the visitors into life and straight from kick-off they threatened to double the lead, with Cisse and Sissoko both seeing close-range shots blocked by Palace defenders.

And that was to prove key as, almost immediately, the hosts were back on level terms.

Wickham teed up McArthur from 20 yards and the midfielder's effort took a huge deflection off the back of Paul Dummett to completely wrong-foot Rob Elliot and nestle in the opposite corner.

And in the 17th minute, the Eagles had turned the game on its head as they edged in front through Bolasie.

Wickham's low cross somehow found its way through a cluster of United bodies and when it finally reached Bolasie at the far post, the forward made no mistake with a driven finish.

After that flurry of three goals in seven minutes the game settled down, with both sides enjoying decent spells of possession.

But with half-time approaching, Palace extended their lead through the lively Zaha.

For the third time that afternoon, the goal was set-up by ex-Sunderland man Wickham, who eased away from Mbemba's challenge on the left and chipped towards Zaha, who was arriving 15 yards out.

The England international winger took it on the volley, sending his strike down into the turf and then seeing it bounce up high over Elliot and past the head of Fabricio Coloccini, who attempted to clear.

Head coach Steve McClaren made a substitution at the interval, replacing Ayoze Perez with Jamaal Lascelles, as Newcastle changed to a 3-4-1-1 formation.

However, they found themselves 4-1 down within two minutes of the restart. Damien Delaney rose highest to meet Yohan Cabaye's free-kick, and when the Irish defender headed back across goal, Bolasie was on hand to finish from close-range.

And Palace weren't done there as they went in search of goal number five. Puncheon wasn't far away with a rising first-time effort from the edge of the area, and neither was Bolasie - sliding in to meet a brilliant cross from the left but stabbing over the top.

Elliot came to United's rescue in the 66th minute, superbly tipping over a long-range strike from full-back Joel Ward, who had been allowed to stride forward before pulling the trigger.

Yoan Gouffran and Siem de Jong were introduced from the substitutes' bench in a double change for the Magpies, and the latter immediately conjured up an opening - siezing upon a Cisse knockdown to fire a half-volley inches wide of the upright via a slight deflection.

But that was as good as it got for the Magpies, and Palace completed the scoring with the last kick of the game.

Again, United failed to clear their lines from a cross and McArthur pounced on the loose ball, steadied himself and fired a low, left-footed effort past Elliot from the tightest of angles.
