David Coote will be the referee for Newcastle United's Premier League trip to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 2pm GMT).

Eddie Howe's side take on the current World and European champions at Stamford Bridge and this will be the Nottinghamshire-born official's third game involving the Magpies this term.

Coote took charge of Newcastle's 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa in August and booked seven players that day, including United's Isaac Hayden, Fabian Schär, Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson as well as awarding the hosts a second-half penalty - following a VAR check - which was converted by Anwar El Ghazi.

Named on the FIFA International Referees List in 2020, he was the man in the middle for Newcastle's 1-1 away draw against Brighton & Hove Albion in November. He showed seven yellow cards at the Amex, booking Murphy, Jamaal Lascelles, Jonjo Shelvey and Wilson before sending off Albion goalkeeper Robert Sánchez in the closing stages.

In the 21 games Coote has officiated so far this term across the Premier League, Championship, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, he has shown a total of 85 yellow cards and three red cards.

Coote will be assisted by Ian Hussin and Nick Hopton on Sunday while Michael Sailsbury is the fourth official.

John Brooks will be the Video Assistant Referee and will be assisted by Sian Massey-Ellis.
