A referee since his teens, Coote's first top flight appointment came in a game involving the Magpies - a 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion in April 2018.

More recently, the Nottinghamshire official took charge of February's Carabao Cup final at Wembley, where Eddie Howe's side were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United.

That showpiece fixture is the only time Coote has overseen a Newcastle match so far this term, with his outings coming mainly in the Premier League but also in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League qualifying rounds.

Coote - whose father, also David, played cricket for Nottinghamshire - was also a FIFA-listed referee for two years between 2020 and 2022.
