Italian midfielder wins vote from supporters as Newcastle United take a 2-0 lead from the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final

Newcastle United made it seven wins in a row in all competitions, securing a 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium.

Goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon means the Magpies will return to St. James’ Park on Wednesday 5 February with a 2-0 advantage in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

And fans loved the performance of Sandro Tonali, who dominated midfield and dominated the Player of the Match vote across newcastleunited.com and the Official Newcastle United App, with 40% of the vote.

Tonali won both of his ground duels and blocked four shots throughout the match. He completed 76% of his passes and only Lewis Hall (53) had more touches among his team-mates than Tonali’s 49.

Alexander Isak was named Player of the Match by Sky Sports co-commentator Andy Hinchcliffe, and the Swedish striker earned 28% of the fan vote for his goal and assist.

Sven Botman’s impressive defensive display, which included eight clearances, earned him 22% of the vote, while Gordon was selected by 9% of fans.
