Newcastle United Women number nine Katie Barker says that the Lady Magpies' 12-0 victory over Gateshead Rutherford Ladies in the Vitality Women's FA Cup on Sunday was the "perfect example" of how the team want to play this season

The Lady Magpies were ruthless in both halves against Rutherford, who reside three tiers below Becky Langley's side, to reach the first round proper of the historic tournament.

Barker scored twice, with Ellie Dobson, Georgia Gibson and Charlotte Potts also netting braces and Beth Guy, Lauren Robson, Daisy Burt and Amy Hargrave on the scoresheet too, and following the win, Barker expressed her delight.

"It was a fantastic result to be a part of," she said. "It's also good to get some more confidence running through the team.

"It was brilliant getting back amongst the goals again, and also setting up a few for the girls."

Newcastle scored seven goals in the first half and five in the second, spread across eight different goalscorers, and Barker was impressed with the professionalism of the performance.

"We never really dropped," said the striker. "It would've been easy to drop off and for the performance to dip, but we kept going for it until the end.

"This result just shows the team that we are and the football we play. We are an aggressive, forward-thinking team and this performance was the perfect example of that."

Looking ahead to the next match, a league clash with Barnsley Women at Druid Park this Sunday, the number nine reiterated her ambitions and those of the team.

"As a team, we want to win every game we play," she declared. "We take it all one game at a time, but ultimately we aren't shy in saying we want to progress as far as possible in both the league and the FA Cup this season.

"Personally, I just want to keep helping the team as much I can along the way and hopefully get more goals throughout too.

"The result (against Rutherford) will give us a massive boost going into a big league game. I think we all needed it and hopefully it helps to push us all in the right direction."
