Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Southampton on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm GMT), we take a look at some of the Magpies' memorable victories against the Saints at St. James' Park...

Cissé's stunner in formidable Magpies display (2012/2013)

Newcastle came from behind to claim a 4-2 victory over Mauricio Pochettino's side in an enthralling meeting on 'French Day' at St. James' Park.

It was two French midfielders who scored the opening goals, with Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin giving the away side an early lead before Moussa Sissoko, one of five French players joining the Magpies in January 2013, equalised from close-range.

Papiss Cissé sent Newcastle into the lead before the half-time whistle with a tremendous half-volley from distance but the hosts were pegged back in the second half through Rickie Lambert's 100th goal for the Saints.

Yohan Cabaye regained Newcastle's lead with a penalty in front of the Gallowgate End before Jan Hooiveld's own goal sealed the win for Alan Pardew's men.

Kenedy's brilliant brace (2017/2018)

Newcastle took a huge step towards Premier League safety following a comfortable 3-0 win against the Saints.

Kenedy, signed on loan from Chelsea, marked his first goal for the club after 63 seconds, collecting Jonjo Shelvey's excellent pass on his chest before spinning and striking a half-volley home in front of the Leazes End.

The Brazilian winger then added his and United's second towards the half-hour mark after completing a swift counter-attack following a Southampton corner.

After netting in the Magpies' previous league contest - a crucial 1-0 victory against Manchester United - Matt Ritchie continued his goalscoring run by netting a 20-yard strike in the second-half to seal the first of four consecutive wins for Rafa Benítez's side.

Willock's dynamic debut as nine-men Toon hold on (2020/21)

Despite playing the final 18 minutes with nine men, Newcastle United held on to beat Southampton in a thrilling 3-2 victory last term, with Joe Willock scoring on his debut for the Magpies and Miguel Almirón netting twice.

Steve Bruce's side got off to the perfect start when Willock, signed on loan from Arsenal in January, broke the deadlock for the hosts after steering home Allan Saint-Maximin's cutback before Almirón's deflected strike doubled United's advantage.

The Saints halved the deficit through debutant Takumi Minamino, on loan from Liverpool, before Almirón restored Newcastle's two-goal cushion on the stroke of half-time on a rain soaked afternoon.

James Ward-Prowse's impressive free-kick gave the visitors hope before Magpies midfielder Jeff Hendrick was sent off but a battling Newcastle, who saw Fabian Schär withdrawn through injury after the hosts had already made three substitutions, bravely held on to secure maximum points.

First-half masterclass in five-star performance (1999/2000)

Newcastle were far too strong for Southampton after sealing a 5-0 win at St. James' Park, racing into a four-goal lead after 31 scintillating minutes.

The Magpies led 2-0 after just four minutes, with in-form forward Duncan Ferguson grabbing a quick-fire brace before Nolberto Solano's strike and Richard Dryden's own goal put Bobby Robson's side in cruise control.

Nikos Dabizas managed to add his name onto the scoresheet, with the Greek centre-back scoring in consecutive games after his strike against West Ham United, to add further gloss towards a convincing victory against the Saints.

Shearer gets United off to winning start (1998/1999)

After starting their Premier League campaign with a winless run of four matches, Newcastle hammered Southampton 4-0 to record Ruud Gullit's first win as Magpies manager.

Alan Shearer, who began his career at the Saints, scored his first of 14 league goals during the 1998/99 season after eight minutes before netting from the penalty spot against his former club after Jason Dodd received a red card for the Saints.

The Magpies extended their lead in the final stages of the Premier League contest courtesy of Scott Marshall's own goal and Temuri Ketsbaia's last minute strike.
