Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League clash with Cardiff City on Saturday (kick-off 3pm GMT), we take a look at some of the Magpies' most memorable victories over the Bluebirds at St. James' Park...

Lovenkrands and Carroll wreak havoc in five-star display (2010)

United delivered the biggest win on home soil over their Welsh opponents for half a century as Chris Hughton's men extended their lead at the top of the Championship to six points with a 5-1 thrashing at St. James' Park.

Andy Carroll played a big part in the opening three goals, which came inside the opening 15 minutes.

The striker scored the first from close range, saw his shot off the post turned in by Gabor Gypes for an own-goal, then produced a trademark header to grab his second.

Peter Lovenkrands was introduced for the final half-hour, with the Danish substitute confirming the rout with a fine double.

Seventh heaven for Benítez (2016)

The Magpies' latest meeting with the Bluebirds on Tyneside was contested in the Championship as strikes from Christian Atsu and Yoan Gouffran secured a 2-1 win - Newcastle's seventh consecutive league victory, equalling the club's run during the 2009-10 promotion season.

Atsu pounced on sloppy defending to score in the opening minutes and Gouffran added the second shortly before the half time whistle.

United held on despite the spirited fightback from Cardiff following Peter Whittingham's strike with 13 minutes remaining, as Rafa Benítez's side maintained an unbeaten streak of nine matches in all competitions.

Late drama sends Cardiff down (2014)

A comfortable 3-0 win for United, this time contested in the Premier League, resulted in relegation for Cardiff as Newcastle sent the Bluebirds back to the Championship after their debut season in the top flight.

United, who had suffered a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to the Welsh outfit in January, gained their revenge in May with Shola Ameobi breaking the deadlock for the Magpies in the first-half before Loïc Remy and Steven Taylor confirmed the visitors' fate with two goals in the dying moments.

Cloud nine for King Kev and co (1984)

Playing in the old second division, United's attacking armoury featured a trio of Kevin Keegan, Peter Beardsley and Chris Waddle.

Cardiff were unable to handle Newcastle that day as an early goal from Waddle was followed by strikes in each half from Keegan to seal a 3-1 win, with the Magpies going on to record an unbeaten run of nine league games.

That spell proved vital as Newcastle finished third in the table, gaining promotion to the first division after a six-year absence as Keegan ended his playing career on Tyneside, finishing the 1983-84 campaign with an eye-catching 27 league goals.

Milburn double leads United to four-midable win (1955)

Newcastle - who had won the FA Cup for a sixth time at the end of the previous season - inflicted a crushing 4-0 defeat against their relegation-threatened opponents at St. James' Park.

A formation consisting of five attackers worked in favour of Duggie Livingstone's side as strikes from Charlie Crowe, Vic Keeble and a double from club legend Jackie Milburn saw the Magpies comfortably brush aside Cardiff, who finished 20th in the 22-team Division One.
