Ahead of Newcastle United's Premier League visit of Leeds United on Friday night (kick-off 8pm BST), we take a look at the Magpies' best wins against the Whites at St. James' Park...

Quinn's quadruple (1989-90)

Mick Quinn capped off an incredible debut for Newcastle United by netting four goals as the Magpies came from behind to seal a 5-2 win on the opening day of the season at St. James’ Park.

The Liverpudlian striker, who joined Jim Smith’s side from Portsmouth, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after cooly slotting the ball into the bottom corner before Leeds, who would go on to win the Second Division title that term, took a first-half lead courtesy of strikes from Bobby Davison and Ian Baird.

Newcastle were back on level terms two minutes after the restart through Quinn’s close-range header before the striker completed his hat-trick to restore the hosts’ lead.

John Gallacher doubled Newcastle’s advantage with an impressive finish before Quinn notched his fourth of the afternoon, a minute later, to condemn Howard Wilkinson’s Whites to defeat after racing through on goal before producing a composed finish, netting his 150th league goal in the process.

New year, same Shearer (1996-97)

Alan Shearer’s brace and Les Ferdinand’s late finish got Newcastle’s new year off to a flying start as the Magpies inflicted a 3-0 home defeat against the Whites on New Years’ Day.

After netting twice in his last league game - a 7-1 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur - Shearer broke the deadlock with a clinical volley from the edge of the penalty area after Ferdinand nodded Peter Beardsley’s corner into the path of the in-form striker.

Shearer doubled Newcastle’s lead in similar fashion to his opener as another inviting corner from Beardsley was once again headed into a dangerous area by Ferdinand and, after twisting and turning, Shearer fired a deflected effort past Nigel Martyn, his 15th Premier League goal of the season.

With two assists to his name, Ferdinand capped off an equally impressive display by netting in the closing stages, turning in Rob Lee’s dangerous left-wing cross.

A Boxing Day fightback (2000-01)

Newcastle fought back from an early setback to seal a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park, with Chilean Clarence Acuña netting his first goal for the Magpies on Boxing Day.

Sir Bobby Robson’s side fell behind inside ten minutes through Olivier Dacourt’s controversial free-kick as referee Andy D’Urso ordered the set piece forward after the Newcastle wall refused to retreat far enough from the original kick.

However, Nolberto Solano marked his 100th Newcastle appearance in fine fashion as the Peruvian levelled the Premiership clash with a delightful free-kick before Acuña headed home in the closing stages of the opening half, connecting with Solano’s in-swinging free-kick.

Bellamy's brilliance sends United top (2001-02)

The Magpies leapfrogged the Whites at the top of the Premiership with a resounding 3-1 home win against ten-man Leeds in January 2002.

Barely a minute had passed before Alan Smith, who would join Newcastle five years later, opened the scoring after just 28 seconds after racing onto Mark Viduka’s headed flick.

The hosts, however, get themselves back on level terms on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Michael Duberry’s bizarre own goal, heading the ball into his own net.

After Kieron Dyer sent the Magpies into the lead towards the hour mark, Leeds were reduced to ten men as Danny Mills received a red card for a needless kick out at Craig Bellamy before the Welshman, the central figure of an eventful encounter, grabbed Newcastle’s third in the dying stages.

Cissé continues cup run (2013-14)

Papiss Cissé scored his first goal of the 2013/14 campaign as Newcastle progressed into the League Cup fourth round with a 2-0 victory against Leeds.

The first competitive outing between the two sides since 2004 saw Alan Pardew’s side take a half-time lead as Cissé, who had not scored in his previous 11 games, netted a thumping header from Sammy Ameobi’s cross.

Yoan Gouffran sealed the Magpies’ passage into round four after picking up Ameobi’s pass and turning his marker before firing a ferocious strike past Paddy Kenny from the edge of the penalty area.
